The MetaGame – The Debater’s Party Game

The Metagame Review And Drinking Rules - The Chuggernauts

The Metagame is opinion sharing party card game that puts players against each other in a variety of ways. The game really gets people talking as most of the modes require players to plead their case in order to win. This game is perfect for those who love a good argument. We also came up with some drinking rules to go along with it because nothing pairs better with arguing than a good buzz.

Due to the nature of this game we decided to include 6 different sets of drinking rules, one set for each game mode. There is other modes in expansions too but we just covered the ones we had. Enjoy!

6 Ways To Play

Matchmakers Setup

This mode is probably the best one to start out with to get a feel for how the game plays out. What happens is everyone gets one opinion card in front of them for other players to place their cards on whichever opinion they think matches the best. Then at the end of each round each player reads out their opinion card and all the cards played on it. Whichever answer they pick, the player who played it wins and earns some points.

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • Every time someone’s card is selected they give out drinks equal to the number of cards placed on that opinion. For example if someone’s card is selected from a pool of 4 cards, they get to give out 4 drinks. These can be split up however you want.

History 101

History 101 Setup

This Metagame mode stands out a little from the rest. The object here isn’t really opinion based at all. As such you won’t even need the opinion cards. Players simply take turns flipping cards and then guessing where they fit in with all the other cards according to the time they were created. Guess wrong and you get a strike. Three strikes and you’re out!

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • For this mode you need to take a sip every time you get a strike. Plus whenever you’re eliminated you need to take an additional sip for however many strikes each remaining player needs. So try not to get knocked out first.

Head To Head Setup

This mode is way more fast paced than the others. So much so that the game demands you hold a hand behind your back just for dramatic effect. This one is strictly for 3 players. 2 head-to-head opponents and one critic to judge their answers. Players race to throw down cards in front of the 7 opinions and the loser only gets to play 6. The critic then chooses their favorite answer for each of the 7 cards.

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • This one’s pretty easy. Just take a drink for each time the critic picks the opposing players card. Take an additional 2 drinks if you only got to play 6 cards.

Debate Club

Debate Club Setup

This one is for those who really want to get a good debate going. This one has players arguing for why THEIR card is the best fit for the critic’s opinion card. Then at the end of each round the critic chooses the best and the worst cards. The winner gets an extra card next turn and the loser now becomes a critic.

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • If your card is selected as the worst card, finish your drink. If it’s selected as the best card pick someone else to take a sip. When you’re a critic take a drink for every time you don’t agree with the majority decision. Conform damn you!

Metaquilt Setup

This one probably requires the most strategy out of all the games. The object here is to place your cards or opinion cards on the board creating a “quilt” of sorts. Where the card you play must make sense with the cards next to it. Where it gets tricky is the other players can challenge you by placing a card they think fits better into that spot. This is judged by the other players after both challengers plead their case.

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • At the end of the game take a drink for each card remaining in your hand. Plus take 3 drinks every time someone beats you on a challenge.

Massively Multiplayer Metagame

Massively Multiplayer Metagame Setup

This one is for your charismatic socialites out there. This is really the crème de la crème if you’re looking to play this game at a party. This one can also be played all night at any pace you want and it’s sure to keep people talking. Basically at any time someone can reveal one of their opinion cards and declare “Debate This!” then read it out. Then the first two players to chime in with a culture cards get to debate for 1 minute, and whoever is there and listening gets to vote on who won the debate and gets to keep the winner keeps the cards as points. At the end of the day you can tally the score and find out who won the game.

Chuggernauts’ Drinking Rules

  • Since this game is an all night game the drinking rules will be a bit lighter. Simply drink whenever you lose a debate. Then at the end of the night or whenever you’re planning on leaving you can cash in all your cards to give out drinks equal to the cards cashed in.

The Metagame Review

The highlight of this game for us was that there’s so many ways to play it and they all actually feel very different. We started with Matchmakers which was a pretty great game mode that felt a lot like Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity where we were basically just competing to make each other laugh.

Then switching gears we tried out the History 101 mode and it honestly felt like an entirely different game. Suddenly cracking jokes wasn’t going to save me from my horrible knowledge of history.

One thing this game does very well is gets people talking. Basically all the modes really set the floor for a good debate. If you’re looking to liven up a crowd this a great way to do it. As far as party games go you really can’t go wrong with The Metagame. Plus if you toss in our drinking rules you have a recipe for a great night!
